WHEN first-time buyers Leanne Holder and Jacob Leaver, both 27, lost their jobs on the same day around Easter three years ago, their dreams of owning a home almost disappeared. They’d been head-hun…

It’s a newly built detached house with three bedrooms in South Wales, in Pembrokeshire.Upstairs is the main bathroom with an ensuite, and then there’s a family bathroom with a bath and then the two other rooms as well. It also comes with a garage. After a few months of rejected job applications, in June 2017, the couple decided to start their own businessWe paid £179,995 for the property and put down a roughly 20% deposit of £32,700.

We both have two degrees each, but we couldn’t get through the door for jobs that we were overqualified for. It was frustrating. We also sold clothes and other things we didn’t need in the flat to have some money coming in.The newly built house comes with a family bathroom as well as an ensuiteEventually, we started to think of other ways to make money and came up with the idea of starting a business on a walk.

GETTING on the property ladder can feel like a daunting task but there are schemes out there to help first-time buyers have their own home.- It's a tax-free savings account where for every £200 you save, the Government will add an extra £50. But there's a maximum limit of £3,000 which is paid to your solicitor when you move. These accounts have now closed to new applicants but those who already hold one have until November 2029 to use it.

The house isn’t going to be our forever home, because we want to have a bit more space eventually. But for the minute, it’s perfect size for the two of us. It’s difficult at the minute with the pandemic because the housing market is a bit all over the place, so at the minute we're going to hold fire. What advice would you give to other first-time buyers and budding entrepreneurs? For example, we’ve moved away from friends and we’re kind of in the middle of nowhere.

Also consider not taking time off, work in the evenings and wake up early and you’ll succeed eventually.
