Canadian banks should have to disclose data related to race, gender, income and neighbourhoods to ensure more equitable access to credit and loans, say organizations representing racialized and Indigenous business owners who want Ottawa to step in.

Nadine Spencer, president of Black Business and Professional Association, says Black business owners grapple with microaggressions, unconscious bias and discrimination in banking, and both tracking and releasing this data would help hold banks accountable.

"Four of our six big Canadian banks own U.S. banks and have, for decades, followed the U.S. law in the U.S. but they have not done anything up here to track and disclose discrimination," said Conacher. The government announced up to $221 million for Black entrepreneurs in partnership with several Canadian financial institutions in September, but Conacher said this program is not enough to address the gap in funding for Black-owned businesses.

"The banks are already collecting this data on all their borrowers, and can easily add one box on the form saying: do you want to identify as a visible minority?" Conacher said. She said many Black people, including herself, have turned to online banking, even before the COVID-19 pandemic, to avoid dealing with racism at bank branches.

"Historically, Black, Indigenous, people of colour have always been an afterthought," he said. "The response to the needs of our community has always been after the mainstream population.""It's integral for them to get involved to make sure that everybody receives equitable service," he said.

Will you SHUT UP

Thats bs

Yes and don’t forget the : transgender, lgbt Catholics, Buddhist, Dutch Refirmwd, Lutherans and converts to Judaism

They should not have any race based data!

seems to be increasing demand for race-related data these day and so far no backlash unless it has to do with crime related

Banks are in charge NOT countries

Let's keep racial data on gun crimes too, while we're at it.

Disn’t we do that long ago? 70’s? And again a generation before that? Kept racial data on goods/services? Each time it enda up being ended because of what doing so creates.

Why? It is irrelevant in the scheme of things! More virtue signalling from the leftist idiots!

Financial discrimination is real . I have proof .💯

I thought there was only one human race. Are mice applying for loans now?

Can we get the race of everyone found guilty of possession of illegal guns?

And what about crime? Are race stats ok for that?

Why so more racism and discrimination can happen based on our banking, loan info...hell no ..I want to see government data as transparency

The only people that will continue to promote race as an issue are the news media and those that think it will continue to give them a leg up over everyone else. One way or the other, it’s discrimination and it can be used to support a cause.

Banks should not have any race-related data.

Do online banking and then no one could know what colour or race you are. Problem solved.

Didn’t see race identification on any documents I’ve ever filled out at a bank. Do I get to self identify as any particular race I would like? Who will determine the race that applies to me?

organizations representing racialized and Indigenous business owners say what?

BlackHistoryMonth racism RacialJustice

15% of the population. Canada is culturally diverse. The constant demand for special attention of one race over another is tiresome. We are all Canadian. Celebrate diversity not division.

What is race. It's only a thing if we make it a thing. And why would we. We are all equal until we make ourselves not equal. Terrible idea.

Certainly not the way to end racism by perpetuating it. Racism ends when it doesn't matter, when no one records it, when it's nothing more than hair colour. We have a lot of work to do.
