Meat industry leaders tell the BBC the government is 'keen' to link up businesses with inmates.

Abattoirs, butchers and meat processors are set to employ prisoners and ex-inmates to help plug labour shortages.

ROTL is a risk-assessed temporary release programme that inmates in open prisons use to gain work experience to help them in their transition back into the community. "It's down to the members [who they employ]," he said. "They [prisons] have got offenders and prison-leavers, we have got members who need labour. It seems sensible to bring the two together."

The food manufacturing industry has also looked to employ former armed service personnel. However, the number of people taking up jobs has been low. The government recently announced the expansion of a kitchen training scheme across jails in England and Wales.sees prisoners train in professionally run prison kitchens for up to 35 hours a week while working towards professional qualifications to help them find employment on the outside.

Gives a whole new meaning to being ‘in the joint’ … 😀

How about use the opportunity to cut down on meat altogether? When are humans going to evolve past killing animals when we have the knowledge for better?

I missed the vital word 'worker' there, and was mortified for a second 😂😂😂 But then, we've been given horse before, so 🤷🏻‍♂️

Working there,or providing the meat?

West (on China): MUST sanction that industry for abusing human rights and for forced labor ! West (on UK): utilize redundant manpower to fully support the industry to maximize their efficiency !!!

Are they going to get paid? Why does this look like forced labor.

Forced labor?

Are those living on benefits incapable of doing this?

BBC: Didn’t you call this as Forced Labour❓ ❓❓❓❓❓❓❓❓❓❓❓❓

Dear followers outside of the UK, please urge your governments to sanction the UK for using forced labour. The same way the UK did re China following the Xinjiang stories churned out by the bbc. UKhypocrisy

slave labour?Where's your humanright?

Wrapping the meat in bin liners ? …seriously great initiative

How about training them to be HGV drivers too, and pick vegetables.

What a beautifully written (nonsense) headline. Why don't you find some proper journalists?

Who is surprised to find criminals working in a country run by criminals, for criminals?

TRAINING CRIMINALS HOW TO USE A KNIFE IS WHAT THIS GOVERNMENT IS ALL ABOUT!

Brexshit

Great idea, for a quick getaway let prisoners fill the gap of truck drivers

Chain gangs

So prisoners will help keep wages low for us plebs brilliant so long as billionaires can day trip in space

So we have soldiers driving ambulances and convicts making sausages. What next, postmen doing root canals and traffic wardens teaching physics? This is insanity. All we have to do is join the customs union and the single market.

Certainly not legal in the USA, or Europe unless the punishment specifically included killing cows and plucking chickens FFS. BrexitIsNotWorking 'The 13th Amendment to the United States Constitution abolished slavery and involuntary servitude, except as punishment for a crime'

Cue the Yakkety Sax. What could possibly go wrong with handing meat cleavers and long knives to prison inmates?

Ffs

It costs around 35K a year to keep a prisoner in an open prison, which I would think they would be the prisoners used, does that look like slave labour as many are commenting, PAYBACK

Great way to pay off your debt to society, earn a few quid and a skill maybe even get bonus parole points/ early release.

Europe and America reproduced slavery, deprived human rights of prisoners , forced prisoners to work!

Wow brexit Britain has both threatened to put old people out in the fields ( it would kill them to work out in the heat plus they don't know how to do it) and now forced labor.

forced labor!

Slave labor much.

Is this serious

Has Brexit brought us to this Boris said it was deal of the Century seems just another lie

Absolutely stupid idea, your giving them knives and a situation to use them. There’s enough knife crimes in the U.K. as it is😡

What about all the people out of work stop the benefits get them back to work

They cried for sovereignty and yet we are becoming an American state more and more every day

UK falling apart, employing prisoners probably paid a pittance. Keeping the cost down.

How about veg ppl or Halal or Kosher ppl will they be forced to work

Brexit supposedly meant we wouldn’t be paying slave wages for unpleasant, hard, dirty and dangerous work - and now we have prison labour! Couldn’t make it up

Slave Labour, they’ll be jailing more people to exploit them too ,disgusting

anandMenon1 If the UK put an extra 100,000 brits in jail, they can solve the HGV drivers shortage.

Sure , and how many will escape , steal knives , Next well be bringing back the road gangs next

How much are they paid?

Some Tory minister on the take most likely thought this up. I'm reminded of Warden Norton in The Shawshank Redemption

Association of Independent Meat Suppliers says 'Brexit, Covid and perceptions of career paths' has caused a recruitment crisis. Don't they just mean the pay's crap? And it's inadequate recompense for a hard and not altogether pleasant job?

Well that’s a skill some could use on release.

So long as they are British prisoners…

Ah, worker shortage, I first thought you meant we'd be eating Soylent Green

Wait a second, what about all the Brexiters claiming they will gladly take the jobs after Brexit? Where are they now?

The Sheriff Joe Arpaio government

if some of them escape, will there be a steak out? & if they get get caught, will they be lamb basted? those who cut up the tripe know their onions if prisoners don't want to help in the meat industry shortage we must ask them what is their beef. what about the porridge industry?

Ah yes. Prisoners with sharp knives. Is that the Brexit dividend we were promised?

Brexit. It's a big hole to plug.

That wasn't on the side of the bus was it?

Force labor, China should ban it....

This is Brexit, and it is perfect comedy!

Why don't they always do this? Give them a stable job, pension etc to return to when leaving prison. You could even differ pay based on good behaviour etc.
