In August 2018, she said she secured nearly $9 million from an investor she met through a mutual friend and applied for a Medical Marijuana Alternative Treatment Center Permit, which is necessary to open a medical marijuana dispensary in New Jersey.

Nearly half of the 102 adult-use conditional licenses have been issued to Black and Latino people. But in order for those licenses to receive full approval, they’ll have to go through a municipal process the commission has no control over. That may become an obstacle because about 400 municipalities, or 71% of the state’s local governments, have already prohibited dispensaries from opening. They’re known as the opt-out market.
