South Africa is facing a huge road infrastructure maintenance backlog estimated to be more than R 200-billion.

As much as 40% of the provincial road network has reached the end of its design life, and approximately 80% of the national road network is now older than the 20-year design life. The state of roads has also been the spark of numerous protests by irate residents and motorists. Dilapidated roads are a common sight in the Eastern Cape. One such is the R411 from Viedgesville to Coffee Bay – a 75 km exercise in extreme driving caution.

The R411 takes tourists to the world-famous Coffee Bay, but it barely resembles a proper road. For the past two decades residents have been calling for action. Local businesses and taxi associations say they have suffered a huge blow due to the condition of the road.“It’s been a while as we are actually hearing from our elders because since 2000 we’ve been actually saying this road needs to be fixed, so it’s been a while. It’s more than 15 years or 20 years”.

Residents say, “Lusikisiki roads are in a very bad condition, you’d swear you are not driving in town due to the condition of the road- there are so many potholes here.”… “It’s been long since the municipality fixed the road, so much that some people have filled the potholes with soil, but that does not last because they do re-open soon after they fill them in.

Mbalula elaborates, “President has directed me that I must launch this project nationally and I must go and work with the private sector and anyone else and then also bring the necessary skill in terms of closing of potholes, so that when you close the pothole, you know you don’t do it for cameras, the pothole is closed. After two weeks when heavy rains comes the potholes open up.

We are committed to working with communities and all stakeholders not only to protect our public infrastructure, but also to use our road network to enable sustainable livelihoods and empower local communities.

Ooh but maybe we can build a glad pole and hang that flag!!!!

And we must trust that clown Mbalula?Man is as useless as hell, they rather wait for after 2024 when we have a government that doesnt steal... they talk about our taxmoney like its just some loose change laying around... R200 billion will get chowed

Ningayikhuphi yonke sametime bafuna uyitya njengala R500bn 🤞🤞

Corupt ANC cadres that have looted the funds will course it to drag on and on to a stage when the citizens have tackle the ANC government on why the project are not completed

If the ANC led government kept maintaining and looking after the road infrastructure since taking over the government in 1994 instead of pocketing and squandering billions of rands, we wouldn't have been in this situation. So, Mr Mbalula start spending your budget wisely.

Road infrastructure was damage by the deliberate corrupt in Transnet rail infrastructure due to profit WMC owners freight companies making use of foreign drivers, we think it's negligence to discover it's deliberate, why not interrogate train vandalizers to get to the culprits?

Useless minister fikile mbalula. He is only scared of the taxi industry mafias!

South Africa is facing a shit, a fucking shit government. That is the only problem

It is tough but we so it coming and this ANC was doing nothing about it

I'm happy to join those who are sharing the good news about Brandonkaren11 I'm not persuading anyone to trade with her but i advise every investor to make the right choice when it comes to Bitcoin mining i got my withdrawal safely without any interruption

On that amount, how much is budgeted for you guys? We know how it rolls. It's no longer secret

MbalulaFikile failed as a sports minister and now he has destroyed transport department.

Where is there NOT a backlog?

That shouldn’t be much of a problem because we blew R500bn in less than 5 months during lockdown. BloodyANC
