As part of the plea, the company was ordered to pay nearly $778 million in penalties. Federal authorities said the scheme allowed the company to operate the cement plant for more than a year beginning in 2013, producing about $70 million in revenue.

The French company Lafarge S.A., an international building materials manufacturer, funneled $6 million to ISIS and associates to protect cement plant operations Syria.A French company pleaded guilty Tuesday to paying terror groups, including the Islamic State, $6 million to keep a lucrative cement plant in Syria operating, marking the first time a corporation has been charged with supporting foreign terrorist organizations.

Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco cast Lafarge as a"partner" in terror, asserting that the company had collaborated with"one of the most brutal terrorist organizations the world has ever known, to enhance profits and increase market share — all while ISIS engaged in a notorious campaign of violence during the Syrian civil war."

According to court documents, the company operated the Syrian cement plant, constructed at a cost of $680 million, from 2010 to 2014. After the conflict began in 2011, Lafarge arranged to pay"armed factions in the civil war" to protect company employees, keep the plant running and strike an economic advantage over competitors in the unstable Syrian market.
