College students and recent graduates who hoped to enter the tech industry are applying for jobs at possibly the worst time in years, as nearly every part of the sector has laid off people or frozen hiring.

“Competition is very fierce,” said Morris, 23. “I really want to break into the cybersecurity field, and they don’t have a lot of entry-level positions.”

He graduated with a computer science degree in December 2021, a time he now sees as “the beginning of the end” for the most recent tech boom. He said he also submitted about 500 applications before starting a job this month as a software engineer at a small company in the Atlanta area. “I was super happy I didn’t follow through with it,” she said. Instead, a large financial institution offered her a cybersecurity job — her first offer — and she jumped at it. Cybersecurity, she said, “is pretty stable.

“My biggest chances of getting a job in the U.S. kind of tanked,” he said, because of the recent layoffs. “In my future, if I want to go to the U.S., that depends on the recovery of these companies.” At colleges and universities, interest in computer science soared during the most recent tech boom. The number of U.S. students majoring in the subject jumped from 37,015 in the 2011-2012 academic year to 135,992 a decade later, according toEngineering overall has become the fourth most popular area of study at U.S.

Next year they will hire again. New manufacturing plants will be opening and will need all those tech workers.

I graduated from computer science in the summer of 2000, just as the y2k bug was solved and the streets were filled with unemployed programmers with 10 more years’ experience than me. THAT really sucked. Never went back - had to pivot.

Trump would not have stood for this bs. Lack of jobs? Don't blame previous admin. Dems have the president n both houses. Will only get worse, much worse.

Learn how to pitchfork

Should have went to trade school

Now they have to actually get a real job!

Gender studies is making a comeback.

This has to be wrong. Joe Biden told me that the job market was great and they are adding jobs. Surely he’s not lying!?!?

The military is hiring....

Tech companies aren't the only companies who use and rely on tech. I suggest young adults find a level of reality and look for tech jobs at some of the Nation's top Forbes 100 companies. There's some big names in that list.

starting to sound like the obama years again

Joe Biden strikes again.

I hear Starbucks is hiring. McDonald’s also.

Yay central banking!

We should retool those job seekers to become virologists and immunologists.

I guess you’ll see a lot of GenXer’s being baristas and living with their parents.

And the president is pushing to bring in tens of thousands of immigrants who will lower salaries in the remaining positions. Glad the youth vote is destroying their economic prospects. The irony is awesome

Welcome to 1991 where you take any temp job offered, have multiple roommates, and a night out is $1 drinks and late night Taco Bell!

Feels like when I graduated in 2002- took a job that I didn’t even need a degree for out of necessity and that was the first time I realized that college is not the key to the big job, humbling moment at 21 when the narrative was always different

Take a look at USAJOBS. The Government hires tons of IT people.

Yeah…I graduated college in 2008 in the midst of the Great Recession and housing market crash. Welcome to the suck, kids. It doesn’t get better.

But the economy is good. There isn't a recession.

Not the government! The government is still looking for applicants
