Retirements, high training costs and poor pay are fuelling a pilot shortage in Canada, industry analysts say, at a time when travel has surged in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

"There's ... not enough people starting up at the bottom of the scale to get people interested in flying," John Gradek, a lecturer in aviation management at McGill University in Montreal, told CTV's Your Morning on Monday.

"They laid off thousands of pilots across the industry and now, with the start of a number of new carriers in the Canadian marketplace and growth of existing carriers, guess what we're short and it's going to be a tough summer to try to find pilots in Canada." But even calling the situation a pilot shortage is oversimplifying a complicated issue, Tim Perry, president of the Canadian division of the Air Line Pilots Association, told CTV News Channel in January.

Not only pilots! Attracting and retaining any professional is becoming a big issue in Canada. People can barely afford to live! We pay too much taxes I would rather leave and love somewhere else

Pay them in US dollars

Pay is shit Make more as a plumber

Aviation, like the health care sector, suffered b/c 🇨🇦 failed to take stock of future workforce needs. Retention issues? Sure. More importantly, we’ve mostly pooched investment in education, learning & development of the next Gen of professionals. 😒

Cause nobody wants vaccinated pilots

Hire better looking stewardices

Same with doctors, scientists atc... Thanx Trudeau.

Can't wait to see where they, RAF, are going to get drivers for these new F-22's,

161 pilots retired between 2019 and 2021.

Because they make trash wages and can make more money driving a semi with less regulations and responsibility…. Derrrrrrr

💡 Stop forcing the clot shot 💡

Continue with the back story of retaining pilots? Between airlines furloughing employees after the 6 months of aid and dismissing employees do to vaccine status (without hiring them back) and pilots medical certification being disqualified how do you expect to retain pilots?

I can think of one particular problem with two results: 1) mandates pushed pilots away 2) jabbed pilots now have cardio-vascular issues and are unfit to fly

Maybe if the schooling was feasible and they had support from our governments. We need to have better access to training for young aspiring pilots.

Fake News what about the illegal immigrants coming from the US?

Who would guess it would be difficult to attract Pilots after 30 years of pay cuts and the most regressive work rules on the planet?

Hire back so many that were fired.

Pay them more better working conditions would solve the problem. A little less greed is all it takes.

Could you find out if elites and private jet companies are only hiring unvaccinated pilots due to the risk associated with the vaccines for Covid?
