Diamond Sports Group on Tuesday filed for bankruptcy protection to eliminate more than $8 billion of the company’s outstanding debut

, according to Business Wire, a move that it hopes helps the embattled company restructure and strengthen its balance sheet “while continuing to broadcast quality live sports productions to fans across the nation.”

Additionally, Diamond — which operates as Bally Sports — is aiming to separate from Sinclair and become a standalone company. Before Tuesday’s development, Diamond had been expected to reject the contracts of at least four of their 14 regional sports networks, which likely included a San Diego market costing the company $20 million annually alone, according to a New York Post report.Diamond was formed after Sinclair Broadcast Group paid $10.6 billion for Fox Sports Networks’ regional channels in 2019, including Fox Sports San Diego.

With the company’s finances in disarray, Major League Baseball had been positioning itself to stream games, perhaps for free in emergency cases, while reacquiring broadcast rights through legal proceedings and negotiating lower contracts with cable companies.
