New rules from the US government could soon let Americans more easily cancel free trials and subscriptions they no longer want, according to the Federal Trade Commission

The proposed rule change announced Thursday would apply to vast swaths of the US economy, covering both digital and physical subscriptions. Products subject to the new rule would include gym memberships, digital streaming and e-commerce, cable TV service, traditional print media and more. The FTC regulation could hit some of America’s biggest retailers and online platforms and a huge range of smaller businesses.

At the outset, all companies would be required to provide detailed information to consumers about a subscription’s terms before they could ask for billing details. Currently, the FTC said, there is no uniformity in how businesses present details such as how long a free trial period may last, the final date a customer can cancel a trial without charge, or the frequency of charges.

CNN has blocked my Twitter account on their site. I'm too truthful...

Easy dont get suckered into them in the first place. It is not a free trial when they ask for a credit card. That is where I stop with all of them. I am like no thanks

It got to a point with auto-pay cancellation hassles that I set up a checking account just for auto-pay and ended up closing the checking account. No more auto-pay regardless of the added discounts.

Yes very simple if you don't say anything it should cancel it self. Not the other way around.

Speaking of free trials....when will CNN be introducing their AI reporter or weather forecaster? Russia has an AI weather girl on the Svoye TV network, who gives reports five times a day. I can't wait to see an AI give Wolf Blitzer or Jake Tapper some competition.

The default should be automatic cancellation unless you specifically buy the subscription.

This is very necessary !!!!

Extend this to mailing list

Hear that TiVo and SIRIUSXM ? These are two of the worst offenders I’ve ever dealt with.

This Federal Govt sure loves to brag about doing things that save us Americans amounts like $5-$10 a few times a yr - guess they think this stuff will somehow make up for how their awful policies have literally cost us ~$600 per MONTH for going on 2 yrs straight now!

Should have a tab and inside a big red button that says CANCEL SUBSCRIPTION. That easy

Good news!!!

They should require streaming services like Vudu and Amazon require pin or password for purchases.

YES! One for the Good Guys!

Do it!!

Finally

Innerpeace112 I like this!

I literally had to visit my ISP today to cancel...

Does it include timeshares?
