The governor of Utah signed a controversial bill that will require minors to obtain the consent of a guardian before joining social media platforms

As part of the bill, called the Utah Social Media Regulation Act, social media platforms will have to conduct age verification for all Utah residents, ban all ads for minors and impose a curfew, making their sites off limits between the hours of 10:30 p.m. - 6:30 a.m. for anyone under the age of 18. The bill will also require social platforms to give parents access to their teens’ accounts. The legislation, which was introduced by Republican Sen.

“They use it in part because it can be private … The law, which would limit social media access and require parental consent and monitoring for minors, will incalculably harm the ability of young people to protect their privacy and deter them from exercising their rights.” Lucy Ivey, an 18-year-old TikTok influencer who attends Utah Valley University, agreed, saying some of her friends in the LGBTQ community may face challenges with the change.

Wait, kids growing up on social media isnt safe? This must really piss off The Left who want kids to be able to do anything they want, whenever they want.

This bill is a blatant violation of the First Amendment rights of young people. It will only create more barriers for them to access information, education, and support online.

How does that even work in practice?

We are quickly going from a constitutional country to a dictatorship . Which is exactly what the right wants total control over everything we do,say, watch, read,do with our downtime. You all should be worried

Agree!

Good. Social media is toxic af

Why is it controversial? If the child is underage and the parents are paying for them, should be parents rights. You can’t say parents don’t control their kids then turn around and say they can’t do this or that to protect them.

Social Networks should've always prohibited minors from using them; do any of you working at CNN have kids🙃🙃

Why is this controversial? Sounds like a great idea (admitting I only read the headline)

How young is minor in Utha, because 12 is the age of consent in most places, if you have a judicial nod.

Not a bad idea

How in the world do they think this can actually be enforced? Seriously.

Why do Republicans make laws that take an army to enforce. Who is going to check all this. Paid people?

CNN calls everything except abortion and sex changes controversial

Lol controversial to give parents rights

I'm glad my son is 40 and can think for himself. No problem in Hawaii.

Controversial? Controversial?

Always 'controversial'

how is this enforceable

Well, considering you tweet about “mental health” struggles pretty much every day - I’d say this is not a terrible thing by Utah. Kids are clearly all sorts of jacked up these days and it’s likely b/c of the social media addiction.

The problem with the RNC is that it credits people with wanting to be moral. People just want three hots and a cot and to primp themselves for their next sexual escapade fully paid by poor saps who want to work. The DNC gets this, hence, having the majority votes.

Good protect the kids

Pitiful!

Welcome to American where lawmakers want to control everything you do. Land of the free my ass!

Why is that controversial? “MINORS”

Hopefully more than 'are you over 18, click yes'

Fr u shouldn’t even be allowed social media until 18 giving how much it grooms children

And what is the consequence, and to whom, if the minor does not, or fakes it? Is the social media provider required to verify parental approval before granting access?

Good

Doesn't seem that wild. They're minors.

As it should be.

Good, social media isn’t for children!! They should be outside playing or doing something productive!!

Nice.

We must bring back marriage, close family, and living with grandparents to save our future generations from the mental degeneration of bad social media.

Should make it federal law

republicans don't want government in your lives Someone please explain what this represents

Ha. Thats a load of bullshit.

A complete ban is unrealistic, right, or it can be distinguished.

And what is wrong with that? you're so loosed on everything the moral side of life and wish for society to be run by animalistic behaviors! Shame!

Why are Democrats always trying to destroy the family unit by encouraging children to go behind their backs?

Why is this controversial?

I’m both appalled and sympathetic at the same time towards this bill.

Great idea. The epidemic of teen depression, suicide, transgender identification are tied to social media usage.

Good

I don’t see the problem 🤷🏽‍♂️

Ooh, parental responsibility. How frightening.

How is this going to be enforce? Another ridiculous bill. Kids can get around curfews, laws regarding underage drinking, speeding, and sexual experimenting, what makes Utah think they are not clever enough to get around this law.

GovRonDeSantis let’s go Florida!

Social media leads to depression , bullying and suicide in many adolescents… happened multiple times this year in our small community , it’s cancer

China has long been implemented, but the implementation is a mess,

That’s very good. I wish that’ll be done in my zoo world

Don’t you love bills that become laws nobody can enforce?

Simple solution: u gotta take a pic of an ID that needs to be authorized

tell me again, how Democrats are the party of big government? 🙄

They shouldn’t be allowed on Social Media as a minor

Regressive...

I guess this whole parents’ rights things is a bit overblown.

So it’s okay for kids to roam around with guns but not use social media?

Good. Social media is overrated. It’s affected my mental health problems as a grown ass adult. Getting off Facebook was the best decision I coulda made six months ago. Not a single suicidal episode since. And that’s kinda a record for me.

As a leftist, this is not controversial and a step in the right direction. As a tule of thumb don’t buy a teenager a phone until they enter high school

This actually makes so much sense in so many ways. Trump didn’t get approval from his dad so look at what happens if that is allowed to happen? 👍

Im 37 and i shouldn't be on social media

Who wouldn't support this?

I'm keeping my kids off of social media as long as humanly possible.

“Controversial” said groomers everywhere

👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾

I hope the youth get smarter and start appreciating what they have and stop 🛑 taking everything for granted!

With no way to enforce 🤣

Good!

36 “Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Messiah.” Acts 2

Interesting. It's worth a try.

Data-efficacy courses should be considered for common-core

Good

Good.

CNN's Quest: 'More Banks Are Going to Go out of Business' -- They're 'Stuffed' with Bonds“More banks are going to go out of business. More state and regional banks in the United States will need to be resolved — to use the technical phrase — they’ll be taken over, they’ll be wound up, they’ll be taken into ownership, all sorts of things.” Seeing CNN, 'One World' and Banks Collapsing in the same paragraph makes me think, 'this is their plan to centrally control the money' (and us) via a digital global currency.... Break the banks, bring in the globalist tyrants. Banks fail when democrats are in charge so the CEOs can get their bailouts. Free money opportunities.
