Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer on Tuesday announced a series of bipartisan hearings on artificial intelligence to “keep abreast of the extraordinary potential, and risks” of the technology.

Also of note is Altman's cavalier attitude toward some of the most immediate potential impacts AI could have. “Many people are gonna ask, why on earth did you create this technology?” ABC News’Altman in March, referring to fears of mass job losses due to AI. “It is going to eliminate a lot of current jobs, that’s true,” Altman replied. “We can make much better ones.”

This sort of hubris should make lawmakers wary of his offer to “work with the government” on regulation. But he was warmly received last month during his testimony on Capitol Hill, which has not only struggled to keep up with the tech industry, but has repeatedly failed to smell the bullshit tech leaders put in front of them.
