The gym shut in December last year

A 'to let' sign has been placed outside a former charity gym in Nottingham city centre months after its closure. YMCA, which also delivers a range of housing services, closed its gym in Shakespeare Street on December 2 last year.

In a public notice announcing the closure at the time, YMCA said it was "incredibly sad" that "it is no longer possible" for the gym to remain open after 20 years. However it assured the decision did not impact any residents living in the YMCA Shakespeare Street accommodation above the gym. An FHP 'to let' sign has now gone up outside of the property. An online listing says the whole gym and studios are available to let either as a whole or separately, ranging in cost from £10,000 to £40,000 per year. This includes retail, gym and theatre groups suits, as well as equipment. Giving his thoughts on the building, Ron Hooper, of Rise Park, said: "There's such a lot of empty buildings, I could see it being bought and turned into student accommodation.

"I think they should retain the character of the building, it's the 1960s stuff that's horrible." His wife, Sue, added: "I'd rather it be in use and cared for. "I think it's a good thing to do." Ryan Noone, 34, added: "If it's been empty that long I think it definitely needs to be used for something, what it will be? I'm not sure. Probably some sort of flats."
