More than 30 “hacktivist” groups have seized on Middle East tensions to push their ideological barrow.

The Australian government and businesses with Jewish and Israeli ties are being warned they could be targeted by hackers under the cover of the violence that has erupted followingCybersecurity firm Cyber CX has identified at least 30 “hacktivist” groups have emerged to take sides following the weekend’s eruption along the border with Gaza. While some are backing Israel, the bulk support Hamas.Many of the groups are pro-Russian organisations that sprung up following Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.

According to Cyber CX’s analysis of Telegram channels, at least 30 groups ideologically aligned with Russia, Ukraine, India, Pakistan and Bangladesh have pivoted their social media channels and capability to the conflict.At least 70 distributed denial-of-service attacks have been reported in Israel, France and India.

“For a critical infrastructure provider, it’s not time to be alarmed but this is a good reminder to have the defences up to their preferred tactics. Ms Mansted said many of the groups were conducting cyberattacks for a mix of ideological and promotional reasons.“There are global battlelines being drawn between Russia and other countries, and this plays into that.
