Customers who experience water supply interruptions could now be entitled to hundreds of pounds in compensation

Water companies are required to offer alternative supplies such as bottled water in the case of extended interruptions to the water supply exclusively revealed in July that the new Environment Secretary Steve Reed planned to prevent water companies from diverting funding towards bonuses and salary increases, has now confirmed that these plans will go ahead after an eight-week consultation period.

If a water company misses an appointment, you are currently entitled to £20 in compensation. This will rise to £50. If a water company does not respond to an account enquiry within 10 working days you are currently entitled to £20 compensation. This will rise to £40. Despite being without water for five days, forcing them to walk two miles to the nearest bottled water station, they did not receive any direct compensation from Southern Water.“One way it should be doing that is keeping a check on all its infrastructure, which it clearly failed to do.

Other scenarios which could lead to payments under the new rules include water companies failing to conduct meter readings or installations as promised. The changes to compensation come alongside Labour’s wider pledge to crack down on mismanagement and environmental damage caused by Britain’s water companies.
