The Soweto born kwaito legend rose to fame with his 2001 hit single Izinja, which became a “Kwaito Anthem,” and firmly established him as a pioneer of the genre.

Here are the thoughts of some of his friends, “Mapaputsi was the loudest, a cool guy who used to talk about music fashion. I have known him for a longest time, at home we had a Kwaito group we used to call ourselves as SOS which my brother formed Dj Mavusana,” says one friend. “There were times where we would perform together with Mapaputsi and others. Rest in peace my brother and condolences to the family we have lost an icon. We will continue to give you our support in South Africa,” says another friend.The Gauteng Department of Sports, Arts and Culture has also expressed its deep sadness over the passing of Kwaito Music star Sandile Ngwenya, known as Mapaputsi.
