Investigations date the crimes back to 2014.

A man has been sentenced to 10 life terms and an additional 60 years’ imprisonment by the Mtubatuba High Court in northern KwaZulu-Natal.Gumede, who mainly targeted women, was arrested in 2022.

Provincial spokesperson Robert Netshiunda says Gumede has established himself as a feared serial rapist in Empangeni. Netshiunda says Gumede started his raping spree in 2014 where he raped four women in a space of three months, one each in July and August as well as two victims in September 2014. “He then continued to rape women until December 2022 before police caught up with him. This convicted rapist would target women who were walking alone in Empangeni and would threaten them with either a knife or a firearm. His youngest victim was a 17-year-old girl whom he raped in 2021 and the eldest was a 29-year-old woman.”The Mtubatuba High Court has on Tuesday, 22/10, sentenced a 38yr-old rapist to 10 LIFE terms imprisonment after police successfully linked him to ten counts of rape.
