Suspected Alcohol Poisoning News

Dean Long,Fiji,ATIA

A leader in the travel industry has given a critical piece of advice for travellers after four Australians were hospitalised in Fiji in a suspected alcohol poisoning incident.

ATIA CEO Dean Long gives major travel advice after four Aussies hospitalised in suspected alcohol poisoning at Fiji resort

The incident comes after two young Australian women died in Thai hospitals after drinking methanol-laced vodka in Laos in November. “One of the important elements that this brings up is the most important thing… if you can’t afford travel insurance then you can’t afford to travel and these instances really do re-enforce the need to take travel insurance out,” Mr Long told SkyNews.com.au.

“We are always happy with an uptick in travel insurance purchases, we think it’s really important… there are still a number of people who still need to take that travel insurance out,” Mr Long said. Mr Long’s critical travel advice comes as two of the Aussies impacted in the suspected poisoning are on their way back to Australia after spending time in a Fijian hospital.

"The DFAT people have been brilliant and they're taking both Tanya and Georgia to the airport, the High Commission people up in Fiji, and we're expecting them home on a flight which lands in Sydney at 6:25."
