Companies don’t lobby for a carbon tax out of the goodness of their corporate hearts — so why do they do it?

When the Alberta government rolled out a carbon tax plan in 2015, the province witnessed a strange sight: Oil company executives flanking premier Rachel Notley as she announced a policy that would cost their companies a ton of money.

“Alcoa’s support for cap and trade was more than a simple public relation campaign,” writes Kennard. Why would you think a company would do anything out of benevolence? Profit minded corps are very predictable because they always do things that benefit their profits. This is a good thing. Governments on the other hand don’t need to be profitable and will do things for power.
