The Ferrara Candy Company was forced to issue a statement as police departments in the U.S. continue to seize bulk quantities of cannabis edibles designed to look like Nerds Rope wrappers

“This product is counterfeit and in no way associated with Ferrara Candy Company,” a spokesperson told Confectionary News. “We want to reassure consumers that the NERDS products they find at major retailers across the country and nerdscandy.com are safe to consume.”

Police in Peabody, Mass., recently seized a stash of knockoff candy valued at US$1.2-million. The THC-infused snacks came in the form of Willy Wonka bars and Nerd Ropes. The seizure not long after another huge stash was found in Johnstown, Penn. With Halloween just around the corner, police are concerned.

“We urge parents to be ever vigilant in checking their children’s candy before allowing them to consume those treats,” the Johnstown Police warned on social media. “Drug-laced edibles are packaged like regular candy and made be hard to distinguish from real candy.” It’s worth mentioning, at this point, that it is highly unlikely that people will give away their cannabis-infused treats to strangers, or anyone else really. While they can resemble more traditional candies, edibles purchased from the illicit market are expensive. It would cost hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars to dose neighbourhood trick-or-treaters.

Still, caution is always a good idea. Check your kids’ candy. If anything looks like it’s been opened, tampered with or is otherwise suspicious, pitch it, as well as ditch any unpackaged treats like baked goods unless you know who made them.Want to keep up to date on what’s happening in the world of cannabis?
