Okta CEO Todd McKinnon said Weissman's expertise is key to the company's plan to make its product a full-fledged security and identity management platform that can work with any type of workplace app. Before that, Weissman was instrumental in helping to build Salesforce into the behemoth it is today. He joined a pre-IPO Salesforce in 2002, and rose to prominence by leading an effort turn its software into a platform by making it possible to connect it with outside applications. In a funny historical footnote, Weissman worked with Okta CEO Todd McKinnon at Salesforce, in the days before Okta was started.
He added that this role was interesting to him because he's able to use all his past experience in helping enterprise software companies grow. As Okta's chief architect, Weissman will take on a hybrid role where he will manage special projects, while also perhaps doing some coding himself. For Okta to transition to a platform, McKinnon said, it has to be "something that is flexible enough and extensible enough to connect to any piece of technology, any operating system, any environment that our customer has, so they can just take Okta and it'll immediately plug into everything they have and it will remove all the friction and it will remove all the complexity in their environment and just make identity very seamless.
