Health Secretary Francisco Duque III on Tuesday argued that while drug manufacturers and pharmacies said they will suffer with the cutting of retail prices of some medicines in the Philippines, they will eventually gain volumes of consumers in the long run.

The signing of executive order No. 104 on the Maximum Drug Retail Price would cut the retail prices of some 87 high-cost medicines by up to 58 percent, a move that will be highly beneficial for Filipinos who could not afford to buy medicines for their treatment.

“Madalas nilang sabihin ‘yan pero tingin ko, sa bandang huli dahil mas dadami ang taong makakabili ng kanilang mga dating mahal na produkto na bababa ang presyo ay dadami naman ang kanilang consumers ,” Duque said. Proposed medicines address leading diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, heart disease, chronic lung diseases, and major cancers. The list also includes high-cost treatments for prematurity, chronic renal disease, psoriasis, and rheumatoid arthritis requested by patient and consumer organizations as well as several medical societies.

Hindi ko ma-imagine bakit po magtataas yung out of pocket , binaba nga natin yung presyo. ‘Di ba nga ‘yan yung umaaray yung mga tao, ang taas ng presyo ng gamot sa Pilipinas so by lowering the prices then easily you can reduce the out of pocket,” Guerrero argued. Part of the review were a series of consultation with the stakeholders, retailers, drugstores, and hospitals to determine the added amount on medicine prices on top the whole sale value.
