Hackers stuck a 2-inch strip of tape on a 35mph speed sign and successfully tricked 2 Teslas into accelerating to 85mph

stuck two inches of black tape on a 35mph speed sign, slightly elongating the middle line in the "3". is a feature of Tesla's autopilot which is supposed to control the car's speed and keep it a safe distance behind the car in front of it.The same happened in a 2016 Model S.

McAfee disclosed the research to Tesla and MobilEye EyeQ3, the company which provides the Tesla 2016 models with their camera systems, last year. Tesla declined to comment to MIT Tech Review but said it would not be fixing hardware problems on that generation of vehicles.

McAfee researcher Steve Povolny told MIT Tech Review that the findings are still concerning, as plenty of 2016 Teslas are still on the roads. "We are not trying to spread fear and say that if you drive this car, it will accelerate into through a barrier, or to sensationalize it. The reason we are doing this research is we're really trying to raise awareness for both consumers and vendors of the types of flaws that are possible," he said.

The safety of Tesla's autopilot systems is under close scrutiny. Last year the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration The company is also fighting a lawsuit against the wife of Walter Huang, an Apple engineer who

Hahaha... BI is crap says Forbes!

Is this news legit? ✅❌ Those hackers keep on evolving, so must our security practices and infrastructure. iotex_io is the future of device and data security – decentralized, robust, hack-proof. InternetOfTrustedThings $IOTX

No hackers here, just a coupla dudes havin some fun.

The robots will take all the jobs and we’ll all have completely autonomous driving cars ... right ?

Seems like the same type of programs used the BTFD

For you stupid people at BI... Essentially this is old technology that is no longer in use by Tesla since early 2016 and is still in use by many other auto manufacturers. The article doesn’t do a good job explaining how Tesla overcame this design flaw and prevents this!

The Wall St. shorts $tslaq will stop at nothing to impede Tesla’s progress to help humanity with its better and safer and health promoting technology and progress. This issue is nothing a software or AI routine can’t fix. Hell 85 is NEVER a valid speed limit in most of the USA.

thatleechi17 Actually this is a false story. Tesla uses Google maps database with GPS to set the speed of the car. They don't read the signs. Also nowhere in the United States is there any road set to 80 mph. Tesla wouldn't run at 80+ mph in self driving mode. Story is FUD.

elonmusk any fixes yet?

Hackers?!!? Vandalism my friend.... news reporting these dude meh

I Dont Think Thats Hacking...

MillyCodes

“Hackers” ? Probably giving them too much credit

So if a speed sign is covered with mud/dust, is Tesla going to interpret it at all?

Woah! A tricky curious and insane test but will be used potentially as a test for racing seasons if we can.

This honestly sounds like a bullshit story. If a sign had bullet holes in it how would that be interpreted? Road speed limits are written into the softwear.

4xRevenue These things continue to be compromised by basic things, yet are allowed to whisk you 80mph into the side of a building with zero driver input- smartish......

I wonder how many drivers would be fooled by the same experiment on an unfamiliar road. I’d guess pretty much most.

truthswarm If a human can misread the sign so can AI. I don't see the point here. Also why not 88mph.

Should have tried a 'minus' sign as well.

Who the heck thought up a 35 mile an hour speed limit.

Seem like they will need to rethink the automation on reading speed lolly pop signs when the car is self driving!

Clickbait. Any older car using MobilEye's EyeQ3 would misread the sign. Plus: 'Tesla's newer models use proprietary cameras, and MobilEye EyeQ3 has released newer versions of its cameras since then which when tested by McAfee were not fooled by the modified sign.'

It’s always the human beings that create problems. We need robots to replace those defective humans.

FunWithTape

Is that really 'hacking'?

A third strip would have tested the max speed of the vehicle.

Would have fooled me too if I had a Tesla.
