The Federal Government is set to announce a major boost to its defence capabilities in northern Australia.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison is set to reveal a $1.1 billion boost for a Royal Australian Air Force base in the Top End. The funds will go towards runway extensions, fuel stockpiles and engineering to support air-to-air refuellers and large aircraft, including US bombers.

The investment significantly steps up Australia's air force capabilities in the Indo-Pacific and signals a more assertive Australia-US posture in wake of China's expansion. The government said the decision to radically upsize the Tindal base would also deliver a “potent air combat capability from the Northern Territory”. Image: News Corp Australia

I don't get this.the government is selling off land to international companies so can't see the point spending on defence. Are the Americans telling Australia they have to do this?

Because the fire fighters and families affected from the fires don't need that 1.1billion dollars right ScottMorrisonMP
