Unemployment claims are processed at the state level. You can find your state's specific unemployment website listedThe application can be filled out in person, over the phone or online. You may need to create an online account and provide some basic information like your driver's license, social security number, and details on your previous job.

Before the coronavirus, laid off workers had to wait for a week before applying for unemployment. But that requirement has been waived, so now you can apply right away. After you submit your application it typically takes two to three weeks to get your first payment. Most states pay benefits for 26 weeks, or about six months.
