Due to coronavirus staffing shortages, about 2 million chickens will be killed at the Delaware and Maryland farms where they were raised, but their meat will not make it to market.

Allen Harim officials have not responded to repeated requests for information about how they're handling"The impact of COVID-19 on the U.S. chicken industry is becoming more apparent as the disease continues to spread throughout the United States," said Delaware Poultry Industry Executive Director Holly Porter.

A letter first shared online by Delaware radio host Dan Gaffney outlines the company's need to reduce the number of chickens it was growing due to a"downward trend" in attendance. A local grower who received the same letter told the same to The Delaware News Journal, part of the USA TODAY Network. Companies like Allen Harim enter into contracts with individual farmers to grow the chickens they slaughter and process.

Minton's letter states that the company will begin"depopulating flocks in the field" on April 10, and that the company will reach out to farmers with more information and instructions if their flock is chosen.

That is such bullshit!!!!!!

WHY?!?!

So why are they being killed? Seriously thinking about becoming a vegetarian.

You have got to be kidding! There are people starving and we are throwing away food? Come on. Find someone to take them.

😡

What a waste, India gave them out to the community in their situation..were is the bailout for them promised?

You Monsters.

Stop slaughtering chickens let them lay eggs or release them ...stop the killing!

Unnecessary

That's so sad and wasteful

What a waste! Ship them to butcher!

Aww!!! 😢😢😢

Sad. Can you distribute them in 🇨🇦

This is stupid and a waste. Time to reopen business and get things back to normal! We have NEVER shut down society for a virus that seriously sickens or kills less than .1% of those infected!

Maybe let people buy them so they can have eggs. Why waste?

This is horrific. :(

China will eat them.

So much wasted food! A terrible sin!

I need that meat to make it to the market!!

More waste while people are hungry.

The mass production of life...like Trump's attitude toward Covid-19 cases

No

STOP. EATING. ANIMALS.

peta FREE THE CHICKENS!!! 🐓🐓🐓🐓🐔🐔🐓🐔🐓🐔🐔🐓🐓🐔🐓🐔🐔🐓🐔🐓🐓🐔🐓🐓🐓🐔🐓🐔🐔🐓🐔🐔🐓🐓🐓🐓🐓🐔🐓🐓🐓🐓🐔🐔🐔🐓🐓🐔🐓🐓🐔🐔🐔🐓🐔🐔🐔🐓🐔🐔🐓🐔🐓🐓🐓🐔🐔🐔🐔🐓🐓🐔🐔🐔🐔🐔🐓🐓🐔🐔🐓🐓🐔🐔🐓🐔🐔🐓🐔🐓🐔🐓🐔🐔🐓🐓🐔🐓🐔🐔🐔🐔🐓🐓🐔🐔🐔🐔🐓🐓🐓🐓🐓🐓🐔🐔🐔🐔🐔🐓🐓🐓🐔🐓🐔!!

This is horrific. Industry needs to step in and address this waste. foodshortage FoodSystems FoodBankChallenge foodsecurity WhiteHouse USDA

These companies are running out of freezer space because restaurants & fast food chains aren't buying as much meat. This meat would end up being thrown away because they don't have the space to store it until it sells.

peta get these little chicks!

Staffing shortages with 20% unemployment. Record demand on food banks while farmers dump food for lack of demand. Trump’s version of making America great.

And all those unemployed?

Why do they need to be culled? Can't they stick around for another month?

in these crisis why they are wasting food, it could help thousands hunger.

They need to find a way to collect these supplies and donate them to pantries and churches. People need this aid and it is not acceptable. There must be a way.

progresivetrend Where's PETA?

WTH, just set them free. Let them die a natural death.

Omg And I Hope The Corona Virus Goes Away Soon!!!💙💜❤️😭😡🥺😢🙁

What!! That's a complete waste, find another solution for heavens sake! Don't kill them

Fear mongering continues

Same kind of thing happened during the great depression.

Shameful . There are Americans without enough food . 2 million meals in the garbage. Its a disgrace

So sad. 😕

What a horrible waste. They should be shipped to those places where people are having to go to food banks to survive.

So due to corona virus.. a mass murder will occur instead of letting these chickens live what life they have... whitepeople

Winning

Meanwhile where I live, you can’t get chicken breasts ANYwhere. 🙄🙄 so sad.

That’s just awful, poor little things, carnt they be homed x

Good it iscrive fir us to eat less meet and free the poor birds from their miserable short lived life !

THEY CAN FUCKING DONATE THE CHICKENS TO NEEDY FAMILIES IN THE STATE THE FACTORY LOCATED IN... HOWEVER, THOSE SAME CORPORATE FARMERS GOING TO WASTE EVERYTHING THEN ASK TRUMP FOR BILLIONS OF DOLLARS BAILOUT... THEY GREEDY FUCKERS ARE NOT CHARITABLE IN TIME OF CRISIS. REMEMBER THAT

That’s ridiculous!! As a chicken dad I find this to be disgusting. I’ve posted video of my happy chickens.

Just let us get back to work!!! What is this going to do to the price of meat?

This will lead to exactly what we were afraid of - a food shortage. I'm wondering if this is artificially created. Got chickens and no workers? Collect the eggs.

Give me those Chicken's I'll Eat them 😛

Since this morning, I have been thinking of meatless meals.

Why so? Shortages are in the whole world.

This makes no sense!

Let them grow up and produce eggs...

☹️

This!

I don't even think I want to eat meat again after reading about that Wuhan meat market where they sold live wild animals. I think I want to become a vegetarian now.

Thank God I’m a vegetarian !

This is only a drop in the bucket of the amount they kill for no reason on a normal basis, tbh.

Save the chickens!! 🐔

There’s plenty of chickens in this country!

Way to go CDC and FDA

Damn.
