President Trump’s executive order allowing meatpacking plants to continue operating through the coronavirus pandemic is stirring concerns among local officials, wary of new spikes in infection rates if closed plants rush to reopen

Since the beginning of the month, meat giants including Tyson Foods Inc., Smithfield Foods Inc., JBS USA Holdings Inc. and Cargill Inc. have closed more than a dozen major U.S. pork, beef and chicken processing plants.

Those closures have plunged the food system into disarray, forcing supermarket...

Trump needs to deal with the toilette paper shortage very fast. Using old WSJ newspaper get very old quickly.

States want to get economy restarted so ready set go

This likely wouldn’t have been as big an issue in the first place if Tyson had taken workers concerns around safety and health seriously even before Coronavirus hit...

Let's be clear here, this isn't about a food shortage, it's about a meat shortage. While I'm sympathetic to the potential loss of livestock that would otherwise be processed, there are other sources of food that can be substituted here while we assess the safety of these plants.

Infection (test positive) is not the same as hospitalization. What is that rate among these workers? Without a vaccine, it won’t go away (never has been a vaccine for a coronavirus). Need a herd to achieve herd immunity.

Meat companies need to hold off before they become Coronavirus infested facilities!! Who wants to purchase meat, take it home and prepare it for their family when it was processed in a facility where employees are sick!! These facilities are questionable at their best!!

Just keep my porterhouses coming

A trump order is no order at all, plant works won’t show up, replacements will never fun better than 50%

Just as other Industries vital for USA functioning, Meat Processing Plants could opérate at 50% capacity, with reduced personnel and keeping them safe with Testing, PPE and 2m distance

Open all meat processing farms...small and large!

Why are we so sure it’s the “working conditions” that may spread the disease? Any thoughts on the “living conditions” when not at the plant? I guess the only possible place people get sick is where they work huh?

In ordering meatpacking plants to continue operating through the Coronavirus pandemic, Trump must have suggested how he could help protect employees and keep them safe from getting ill ?

With NO PROTECTION for workers... Corporations will just look for PROFIT... KILL workers... Repubs. have proven they are for PROFIT... not Americans.. 60,000 DEAD... in two months.. now they want to run for PROFIT... what happen to the RANTS about pro life... just a JOKE?

No to mention the fears the workers have of infecting themselves & their families. Screw local officials. Report the danger workers are forced to endure to keep their jobs. Report of failure to provide PPE

Are food shortages a better alternative?

Governors around the country refuse to follow Trump covid orders siting states rights so what’s the problem Iowa, Nebraska, Colorado, Missouri

The root of this issue is an OSHA type situation. Workers are contending an unsafe working environment. Maybe realDonaldTrump can staff the plant with USMC ...

Get the workers PPE! Is this some mystery?

Death from starvation may be the enduring story of the controllavirus scamdemic.

Officials, are full of foul!

WE get it, orange man bad., etc., ad nauseam. If he doesn't use defense act then you rail him, if he does, you nail him to a cross. 'Journalism' youareadisgrace

But Trump is protecting companies from liability. Doesn’t that cover all the issues? Surprisingly for Trump, it does not. There are numerous issues related to treatment and infection rates.

Geez, just take precautions.

Amazing joe absolutely no Walmart or Amazon facilities have any outbreaks reported. And we know they are jam packed with people. Hmm.

If the fed is going to issue this, the fed needs to step up and give a little extra support to these communities.

Get over yourselves, WSJ!! Those of us in the health field KNOW if you follow guidelines, you should be just fine. It's FakeNews media like YOU which is trying to tank OUR country!

They’re essential. Like healthcare workers or grocery store workers. Sorry but it is what it is

Fear is legitimate

Do the local officials have any concerns about people having nothing to eat?

It’s a little more than that WSJ- its workers are dying or suffering from Covid, spreading it throughout their communities. But leave it to you and Murdoch to minimize this. Shame on you.

Tyson is Chinese owned.

Is this another conspiracy to starve the nation or is it planned?

Be concerned, develop a plan, take precaution, do not close the food. Why is this an article? (I hesitate these days to call any post from a media outlet 'news' )

yeah just take a look at JBS meat packing in Green Bay, WI - caused the massive Covid19 outbreak in Brown County😮

Allowing or forcing?

Food chain more important than lives of a few.

This is why USA READY proposals are part of our platform, to ensure that ALL Americans have 60 days worth of necessary and life-saving supplies on hand to deal with any crisis. The 'just in time' economy that big business has created does not work during a pandemic.

Life is not a matter of holding good cards, but of playing a poor hand well. - Robert Louis Stevenson

Every new day, Trump proves this article's point. 'Trump ... is beyond good and evil. He is as amoral as an amoeba. He does not know and cannot know if any of us actually exist, or if anything exists beyond the boundaries of his skin, except as fodder.'
