Leading Australian artists say the collapse of Sydney arts and cultural institution Carriageworks should be a “wake up call” for governments to step in and help the struggling creative industries.

Carraigeworks in Redfern announced it was going into voluntary administration on Monday night citing the cancellation or postponement of six months' worth of events and programs, including the Sydney writers festival. “[Carriageworks] has become a Sydney institution attracting one million visitors a year to the site in Redfern and up to 5,000 people every Saturday to the Carriageworks Farmers Market," Mr French said.

The arts centre said financial firm KPMG had been appointed voluntary administrators and that “all options were on the table for consideration”.Executive director of the National Association for the Visual Arts Esther Anatolitis said it was time for governments to offer proper relief packages for the industry.

considering they merged the arts department with transport it's pretty obvious how much the liberals care about the arts... or transport...

Maybe Clem Ford and Catherine Deveney could donate their arts grant $.

That's odd. I thought no evictions applied to this situation as well. The arts get patronage often but paying rent while there's nothing on will sink any venue fast.

Get a real hipsters. That goes for you too SBS staffers.

I couldn't imagine such an important cultural institution being allowed to fall by the wayside in cities like Paris and New York. Carriageworks has always reminded me of Brooklyn's BAM and there is no way that would be allowed to go under.

Get a real job hipsters.

Please help arts and culture! Thanks for your support!
