Business school startup Jolt promises a 'sane alternative' to the $200,000 MBA. I sat a class over Zoom to see if it lived up to the hype.

, a forum and community group targeting business school students, found the total price tag had ballooned to more than $200,000 at a dozen institutions when also taking board and other fees into account.

The firm's offering is competitively priced. Applicants can choose to pay £85 for three classes, £129 for five classes, or £2,450 for a year's worth of unlimited classes. In theory, Jolt's reliance on videoconferencing should have made the transition to lockdown relatively painless. The firm had intended to launch "Jolt Remote" in 2021, but sped things up to combat the impact of COVID-19.

Full disclosure here: I have never had much interest in learning how to become a "power seller", let alone studying for an MBA or its alternatives, so I had to wonder how the master salesman was going to keep me engaged. After a brief round of introductions, he began: "Throughout this class, I will occasionally ask you to participate and answer some questions," he said, highlighting the chat function on the righthand side of our screens.

Whether honing my 30-second elevator pitch or "turning cold calls warm" by networking and setting up a chain of introductions, I came away from these two lectures with fresh ideas about how I could do better work.
