"I can only hope that the changes that have been made to occupational safety in relation to pearl diving as a result of his death can provide his family with some comfort for their profound loss," Coroner Barry King wrote.
He said employers would still be bound by standard OHS laws, but it became clear an industry-specific set of standards was needed after Jarrod's death. "My big problem is [the language] 'this should happen, this is a good idea' — that to me is absolute soft-rubbish talk. They should be much more forceful," he said.
