Construction of a new $749 million Sydney Fish Market is set to start in the second half of this year, after the state government listed it among a new batch of 24 projects to have their planning assessments accelerated.

"This is just an opportunity for an incredible facility to be built on the shores of Blackwattle Bay, obviously subject to the approval processes being completed over the next four weeks," he said. The project involves relocating the markets from the present site to the head of Blackwattle Bay, and, once complete, will include space for fishmongers, restaurants, bars and the Sydney Seafood School. It will be complemented by a waterfront promenade, park and outdoor plaza.

With the coronavirus pandemic causing a severe economic downturn, Mr Stokes said the government was "pulling out all stops" to support projects that would create jobs, boost investment and had broader public benefits.
