Opinion | The Trump administration is denying career diplomats the chance at ambassadorships and packing the jobs with unqualified appointees. By brettBruen

I was really startled when a current senior official relayed that message to me during a recent conversation. This new information indicates the Trump Administration may be accelerating plans to dismantle the diplomatic structures on which our national security has depended for decades. Without experienced ambassadors standing watch, America's first line of defense will increasingly falter and fail.

According to those who have seen this summer's list, across all of the Americas, there was only one ambassadorship available for career diplomats: Nicaragua. Sure, Canada, Chile, Argentina, and a couple other plush posts in the Western Hemisphere are usually used for presidential patronage. But, the Secretary Pompeo has now taken it to a new extreme.
