The CEO of Black influencer marketing agency Shade shares tips for how companies can be better allies — and avoid getting ridiculed on social media

For brands and influencers alike, Bastien said taking the time to listen to the Black community and learn more about topics like the deep-seated history of racism in America and police brutality is the first step to being a supportive ally. In recent weeks, Bastien said he has felt optimistic by the response from his white friends and colleagues that are pausing and allowing him to be heard.

He said he has been heartened by brands and individuals alike that have moved away from views that "we are all one race" or All Lives Matter messaging that he said dangerously dilutes the cause and silences Black individuals by stripping years of racist history. Bastien encouraged influencers to use their platform to speak out against racist behavior and to hold power to account. He cited influencer Jackie Aina as a strong example for an Instagram post she shared on Wednesday calling out companies making empty statements while also holding almost exclusively white leadership and executive boards. Aina asked her followers to abstain from making any purchases until hiring statistics are released.
