Tesla owners reported more problems in their first 90 days of ownership than the other 31 U.S. auto brands included in the new J.D. Power study.

Tesla isn't officially part of the study because it doesn't allow J.D. Power access to customer vehicle registration data. The firm said it decided to profile the electric car maker anyway based on the roughly 1,250 owners it was able to survey, a majority of which owned a Model 3.

"Unlike other manufacturers, Tesla doesn't grant us permission to survey its owners in 15 states where it is required," Doug Betts, president of the automotive division at J.D. Power, said in a statement. "However, we were able to collect a large enough sample of surveys from owners in the other 35 states and, from that base, we calculated Tesla's score."

J.D. Power collects customer registration data from each state. But some states, including Tesla's home of California, require automakers to grant state officials permission to release the data. Tesla's issues, according to Betts, are primarily with production and things such as paint imperfections; poor fit of body panels; trunks and hoods that are hard to open and close; wind noise; and squeaks and rattles.

A driver uses the map navigation feature on a touchscreen control panel just prior to the Tesla Motors Inc. 8.0 software update inside a Model S P90D vehicle in New York, U.S., on Monday, Sept. 19, 2016."These are primarily a result of factory quality," Betts said in an email. "Also, in the area of electric vehicle issues, they do have complaints related to: range lower than expected; range gauge is inaccurate.", which was not part of J.D. Power's report.

Serious flaws with JD’s survey and method. Tesla data points did not include CA and NY owners which are their largest and most tech savy customer base. Also, complaints about missing features or operational confusion are counted as quality issues. These are not defects.

23 issues for me

In a few cases, the 'problems' are small fit & finish issues that mobile service can fix. The most important parts of the Model 3 (drivetrain/ battery) are very reliable. I'll take the instant high torque, fun to drive, 120+ MPGe, no maintenance, Model 3 any day over other cars

Why do you guys keep posting this bullshit? They must pay you well. There's no evidence whatsoever that your statement is true. Instead of regurgitating their garbage and even misstating it, you should be doing an exposé on their business model.

elonmusk you really need to address this and not push out as many as possible... I wonder if nikolamotor will do better with quality control on the Semi? They will certainly go further...

And TSLA should be $200 by now

The end of the dream.

Tesla is the best cnbc dont fuck with my shit

Let’s put some perspective on these numbers. Average problems for BMW, Mercedes, & Audi is 201 per 100 cars. That’s 2 issues per car. Tesla is 250 per 100 = 2.5 issues per car. 2 vs 2.5 is hardly significant for an individual consumer.

Millennials don't care about reliability, quality or durability. They just want pretty buttons and touch screens.

True. 9 dealer visits in the first 6 months on the model X and 6 on the model S. However, it cost me nothing but time and I've had only 2 other issues in the next 2 years. My noodge lawyer has had dozens of little 'problems' on his model 3, but he still loves it. C'mon F150!

GerberKawasaki

But the stonk Price!

Is that because they are made in China?

Wouldn’t want one anyway, don’t care.

Tesla is driven by Hype. Not economy or Quality

Telsas are hot!

Complete BS

I will rather choose someone which has more problems but great customer service over someone with less problems and lousy customer service.

Fanboys take delivery .... act like this and don’t read

Andddd?

Our Tesla has been great 👍🏿

Another attack on Elon and Tesla. Did Elon not drink the Kool Aid ?

I don't bother to buy a fast car esp when I can't effort ot and our speed limit in my country was like only 80 till 110. Wasted

they make it up in customer service

Keep in mind Tesla doesn’t advertise. Financial bias. I’m into audiophile stuff, the companies that take full page ads monthly, their equipment always tests well, if not they lose an advertiser. Car co’s that take ads in the car mags, same deal.

Shocking!

This is not a news reporting agency, it is an entertainment corporation. So, they have been able to alter and report untruths do to a corporate loophole.

All new cars have issues dip shits.

Tesla is the definition of POS.

But they are really fast! Like really fast!

Yikes

Well deserved, dorks trying to be cool

Buy a Nio instead.

And it is only electric motors and batteries, nothing that should fail before 15 years. But, when Tesla is doing it, it all goes wrong. TESLA share price is over $1000. What are the odds?

Ooh..Just wait until elonmusk sees this!!! Expect the highest quality vehicle ratings if not by the end of this year, then by the end of next.....Bet. Go get 'em Elon.... Don't take that shit!!!

No shit. If you want to see an idiot look for a tesla owner.

😳

But, the biggest automaker in market cap keeps being cool despite the poor quality. Tesla will die someday because of some strange reason, not a rationale one.

What some will call some issues a problem, other will call learning curve...

Not surprised 😶

Not at all surprising.

elonmusk you might want to look into this.

Tesla is overrated

Ok , I had small alignment issue in my Tesla on one of the doors like 2mm, they came and fixed it for free . My wife has a brand new Mini Cooper, the car has so many alignment issue, I just don’t want to report it because I will replace this car soon with the model Y.

The second most valuable automaker in the world !

MidweekEveningService

My Tesla stunk like shit when I first got it and I’ve yet to find the source to this day

so much for elonmusk ’s bravado. A moneybag who pretends to be an engineer. Not even founded tesla, like trump who franchises his name!

Stop spreading FUD

Not surprising, Tesla will survive as a battery company, not a car company.

$TSLA 50 day is 842.

Overrated!

They’ve at it again.

stevelackmeyer Weird. I've had my tesla Model 3 for 15 months now and have not had any problems...mechanical or software.

Has anybody ever boasted about how great their Hyundai is? Let’s be real here.

:(

Rage tweets from Elon in 3, 2, 1...

Bullish lol

Sounds like someone is short $tsla and so they decided to run this article for them.

Actually here’s an explanation of what JDPower is doing: they are trying to force Tesla to hire them as “consultants.”

If you buy a car made in a tent, what exactly are you expecting?

elonmusk What the hell?

Could the $tsla bubble be ready to burst?

Good thing $TSLA and elonmusk are both owned by China now.
