The founder of Duolingo shares the three key principles of crowdsourcing to help grow your business

In 2007, he created reCAPTCHA, a human verification system now owned and used by Google to weed out bots and improve its Street View tool on Google Maps. Von Ahn initially asked people to recognize words to help digitize old books that computers could not read.

"One of the biggest things is just really, people do it because they believe in the mission," he said. People clearly wanted to learn languages collaboratively — within a week of opening up its tools, 50,000 people applied to add a language on Duolingo. But if you let your contributors down, they will lose faith in your product. Von Ahn spent a lot of effort ensuring every course on Duolingo met high standards by measuring user engagement. The top 5 languages everyone is learning on Duolingo right now, and how to sign up for them

The leaderboards alone increased the average time spent on Duolingo by 20%, he said. Now, Duolingo makes money through a subscription that gets rid of ads, and by selling an English test accepted by around 500 institutions, including Columbia University and Yale.
