The pandemic, and the government intervention it provoked, may hasten an evolution towards social democracy that was already under way

from a large pot. One lad takes enough for a family of four, sick at home with covid-19. Ms Contreras and six helpers provide 250 free meals a day, and fresh bread every second day for evening, a charity, provide the food.

The government’s record in handling the pandemic has been mixed. As a share of its population, Chile’s 321,205 confirmed cases and 7,186 deaths are among the world’s highest. Rather than locking down the whole country, the government just sealed off covid-19 hotspots. It started talking of a return to a “new normal” in mid-April, before the disease had peaked. The government imposed a total lockdown of the capital, where a third of the population lives, only on May 15th.

The government has been as maladroit in shielding Chileans from covid-19’s economic ravages. It has acted slowly. Its measures, though large, have not met the need. Its under-reaction could cause a backlash that errs in the opposite direction. Post-Pinochet governments have mostly kept budget deficits low. This year the government expects the deficit to reach 9.6% ofin 2019 to around 30% this year.

We Chileans know our history. We are the richest country in LA only because with departed from the socialist views of our neighbors.

They only need to see my country, Argentina.

And the Economist enthusiastically supported their efforts to address inequality before they got 'angry' about it?🤔Uh...no.

That Is happening in Argentina

Could you please explain your final line further? What do you mean by populist policies? Changing our constitution is populist....?

Exactly what we’re currently experiencing in México.

did The Economist write this tweet?

Europe has shacks too mmm 🤔 I will sleep better new info ℹ️ learnt!

rodrigosobarzop From 2015 to 2019 the No. of migrants soared 5 times (177.332 to 939.992). These are official figures, many more illegal with tacit support of left-wing govs, increasing demand for hospitals, social serv & housing. Irresponsibility exacerbated by pandemic.

Agree, here people is not thinking, specially politicians

Holding the line for your masters? Well done. Loyalty is sooo unusual these days. Can't have talk of lessening inequality. No saying where that might lead. The rich depend on you.

We are drowning in a glass of water, what Chile really needs is to improve social policies, have people specialized in the subject, ministers who know the problem well and be on the ground seeing reality. An NC does not solve the problem, but better policies and real social work.

Because the origin of all our ills comes from its globalist zeal and its policies contrary to the well-being of Chile. We have to be more nationalistic and not let them tell us from the outside how to govern! No to the UN, its subsidiaries and its partners !!!

Populism and demagogy reign in Chile. Especially in the attempt of populist President Joaquín Lavín.

Politicians are the problem. Not the economic model.

Inequality is not the problem, poverty is.

The Caracazo lead to the rise of Hugo Chavez, Piñera's decision to use the military crush protests against him opens a new door to the unknown. Did we witness a Santiagazo on October 19, 2019? The murders and atrocities committed by Chilean armed forces and the police are similar

Take care! You are going to pay a high price.

Inequality is NOT the problem, poverty is. With those populist policies, POVERTY will definitely increase in the upcoming years. GhiselliSt

shut up larva you have no idea what you are talking about.

Go fuck yourself

Conservatives are not good facing a crisis. Friedmann economic theories are going down, goodbye.

Are the Posh Boys and Girls worshiping at the 'Shrine of Pinochet', by way of 'more social democracy' ? S. Allende's angry ghost P.S.

Chilean communists are really pushing to queue up again to receive a bag of bread.

Gotta hate those “populist policies” 😂🤣😂

why is the economist obsessed with chile ?

US massacre of the democratic govt of Chile 40 years on

So, they can't ever win?

In today's language a 'rich' country does not necessarily mean rich inhabitants, but a terrible distribution of wealth. And the only thing the 'world elites' want are rich countries whom to suck money off from.

Populist policies do not make you poorer. Marxist policies do. When did the Economist back socialists? What is going on?

WorldwideRevivalVigil

There is no good consequence to be America's follow

Oh no not populist policies!

Why did the US US gouvernement kill Allende then? He had been democratically elected... and Chile would be better off today.

This is a populist pig

Sounds like America

Poorer? Chile is not poor, it is socially unequal
