When I moved back to Ohio from Seattle, I thought my days of cutthroat competition for a place to live were behind me. I expected this to be a relatively easy experience compared to the rigors of finding a decently priced apartment in a major city. While these two cities are two different worlds, I didn't expect them to have so much in common, especially in the housing market.

Data shows that over the past few years, Midwestern cities have slowly been increasing in population. As millennials want to own a home and start a family, and coastal cities face an explosion in housing prices and rents, the Midwest has become an affordable haven. And, it seems that coronavirus has accelerated the trend.

While those activities are on hold due to coronavirus, the Midwest has something else people want: space. Single-family homes are common in the Midwest. They're getting a lot of attention on the market, according to Ortegren. In the Midwest, living is affordable and homes are spacious — two things that are certainly nice to have during a global pandemic.One Saturday, I had a showing cancelled on a house after someone else made an offer.
