The pandemic has prompted many city-dwellers to consider a move to the US countryside, but are they prepared for the costs?

because we bought it at foreclosure with some major unknowns — including if the septic system and plumbing worked. Although it was risky, it allowed us to buy in an area that otherwise would have been unaffordable.

All of these were new line items on my budget. It was frustrating to pay $80 a month for trash removal when our property taxes were already high. We have beefed up our emergency fund knowing that if the well or the septic system need repair, that can't be delayed — you have to have drinking water and flushing toilets.
