A group of California Lyft drivers is accusing the company of forcing them to buy their own personal protective equipment to avoid catching Covid-19 at work instead of providing them with enough to do their jobs safely

It's the latest conflict in an ongoing labor rights dispute between rideshare workers and so-called gig app companies, including Uber, Doordash, GrubHub, Instacart and Postmates, who classify their drivers, shoppers and couriers as independent contractors rather than employees.California law requires companies to provide PPE to employees but not independent contractors.

"We continue to distribute free cleaning supplies and face masks at that hub today," a Lyft spokesperson said of Oakland on Wednesday."The Lyft Store is an additional resource to provide millions of drivers across the US easy access to cleaning supplies and face masks that have consistently been difficult to find.

That's ridiculous! Why are they allowed to work in the first place! Don't they know there's an unemployment benefit and a virus flaring everywhere! Oh wait, the UE benefit is ending. I think some of the funds given to BLM should help the black Lyft drivers. Defund everything!

Aren't they considered Independent Contractors... which usually provide all there own tools or what is needed to do the job etc.. right

Explains a lot ! Hard to get a round-trip in my area 😒 But to PROTECT myself I have no problem supplying my own masks etc . 😷

Sorry...but aren’t considered independent contractors?

If it is just a contract then you are self employed. You pay your own expenses. I know have been self employed many times in my life.

They are independent contractors. Come prepared or don’t work. Their choice.

They can't afford masks? Do LYFT drivers even pay taxes?

They aren't employees. They are independent contractors who can expense equipment expenses from their taxes. And boy do they expense everything and anything.

Don't they Drive their own cars and shouldn't they by nature be expected to keep them clean? Aren't Masks already expected to be worn nationally? Lift should hire more Conservative Drivers............ Oh wait, Conservatives actually try to get real jobs.

Nobody is safe when a mob is on the streets Nobody Not even democrat politicians who think they are heroes

They likely also work for apps who provided PPE (Uber, DoorDash) so in a way Lyft is not being competitive here.

Another example of how stupid and out of touch cnn really is. These are private contractors. I bet CNN does not provide all this to their contractors?

Welcome to the wonderful world of contract work. Suck it up buttercup.

I’m sure you can spare a few dollars for a mask and Clorox lmao. People find anything to “protest”

Nurses and other healthcare workers say SAME!!!!!

Lyft doesn't provide drivers with cars, gas, a drivers license or a phone for the app either. OR health insurance, 401k, vacation time, sick time or paid holidays. You all knew that going in but a 25 cent mask is the line? Come on

he off chance that we detox the alert

No one has died in a tent.

Do they work for lyft ?
