Rolling coverage of the latest economic and financial news, as the UK officially falls into recession

Newsflash: The UK economy contracted by 20.4% in the second quarter of 2020, as the Covid-19 lockdown pushed the country into an unprecedented slump. That puts the UK into recession for the first time since the financial crisis, and follows a 2.2% drop in GDP in January-March.

As a business owner it does not seem like a recession. Last time there were zero orders and every day customers going bust. But as of now we are busier than ever and getting paid on time. Maybe we are just lucky but everyone says the same

Enjoy it

As the solution is not in the 'nanny state', it is the problem according to neoliberal dogma, that they recover the innovation of Mrs. Thatcher when she was a refrigerator, that Mr. Jhonson inject air into the economy, it is free and with ice cream he gave Benefits

UK was already heading that way...Coronavirus is short shock the curve of economy was pending downhill before...and won't go up for a while and brexit still have to become effective...

Not so much ‘falls’ as ‘led into.’

So what did you actually think would happen. Not news to most people in the country. Its very obvious what would happen.

GDP should not be the only measure of the real wealth of a nation.

White nationalism is bad for the economy.

jumping on media hype - the old economics wagon? Might need an MOT! Economic growth is measured by outdated ‘GDP’ which overlooks much of intangible value in society. Never ending economic growth = outdated false paradigm doughnuteconomics guardian changetherecord

Yay thanks Boris - highest death toll in Europe from Corona virus - deepest recession of ANY of the richest countries - a no deal brexit just around the corner I mean, the UK really is doing so well under Boris and co isn't it!

Every single person shouting for lockdown should be ashamed. This is on you. Blood on your hands.

Good luck managing on your own outside the EU!

You remoaners! always good for a chuckle

Meanwhile in Scandinavia, Norway and Sweden's economies are only expected to shrink by 4pc this year [Source: Telegraph]

One of my tweets when all this bullshit started said the GDP drop would be 23%. I still think they’re fudging the numbers. It’s probably more like 35% now! All in industries that CREATE wealth in the true sense of the word. Instead of counting the public sector which doesn’t!

Those countries that followed standard public health recommendations for controlling communicable diseases and mitigating respiratory and contact spread have more successfully limited the damage due to the pandemic.

BUT!!! Uk has always been in a recession. Not fully recovered from the mess of 2008 subprime market recession. Why making mountain out of a molehills. Panic button need to be activated again. Ops !!! it’s “technical recession” now 🤫

The way Tories shifted the attention on dinghies before this headline

ESTO SIN DUDA ES CULPA DE AMLO

PM Boris Johnson has always spoken about delivering that’s world beating..he has finally delivered on his promise..he has delivered a world beating recession

Pandemic lockdown was so tough that Britain’s economy falls into the recession after those three months.

Brilliant. We weren't expecting that. What a surprise. Jeremy would have done so much better.

Boris and co. are doing such a great job that the UK recession is TWICE as bad as most of the G7 economies. Now that is WORLD BEATING!!

And LiarJohnson has gone on holiday

Will UK Interest rates go negative in 2020 as a consequence?

But according to Johnson it's a success.

and it's not just GDP. Look at this data from the Fragile States Index. Britain has fallen from 17th place in 2006 to 30th place today

BorisJohnson TOLD YOU IT WILL BE WHERE IT HURTS 🗨

I organised a builder to speak to a major broadcaster about GDP figures/recession & they said, 'We've actually grown during lockdown and are looking to take on staff.' They were not used on the news report! Yes we're in recession but why not report good & bad? MSM Recession

65,000 deaths from Covid and it is all the fault of a few hundred migrants on dinghies and Ben and Jerry Ice Cream Company 😉

In Germany, your former 🇪🇺 partner, it’s half... 🤷🏻‍♂️

Just the beginning I fear. When the furloughed workers become unemployed we can expect an acute lasting recession. Let's hope Covid-19 doesn't return with a vengeance; especially for those who would've needed the now dismantled Nightingale hospital. Good planning Boris.

But bounces back significantly in June. Why not report that?

nice

But... 3 kids in a dinghy! 😱

When will we realise that the system is broken. We are constantly in this cycle of boom and bust. It's what capitalism is. For God's sake change the record.

Time to perhaps take a long hard look at whether GDP is of any use. It does and never has been a suitable measure of a nations well-being and this will have no meaning to those languishing in poverty. Time to take stock.of what really is important

The Brexit Boris dream has now become Boris Brexit’s nightmare,

Result of BREXIT

Who could have ever seen it coming? 🙄

Nothing to worry about. Now that the UK has Brexited, it'll be getting that £350m a week to boost the economy just as the big red bus promised 👍🏼

This is what BorisJohnson wants Those £8+bn in short positions against the UK can't be realised unless GDP crashes And GDP will crash through a crash out brexit, and 70,000 Covid deaths, and destruction of social security Well done turkeys, Christmas is finally here!

Is this the 'Golden Age' Borris and all his Brexiteers promised?

Sobering?

remain_eu Boris the Destroyer marches on leaving a huge river of slurry in his wake.

That headline makes it look like you're almost surprised. Of course the GDP has tumbled after the country has been in lockdown for 4 months.

But you're still going to publish pieces against going back to work, right?

Eloquently put by someone as the consequence of self-imposed sanctions...!🤣🤣🤣

This is hilariousafter all the leftie anti-government rhetoric about locking down too late and ending it too early Just shows how ridilculous they are

'But look: a few people in a dinghy..'

But but but house prices !

And then Brexit in January to top it all off. Talk about kicking ourselves while we’re down.

NHS Clappers and Mask Nazis take note

Thanks to stay at home readers of your failing rag and it’s champagne sipping north London hacks, currently vacationing in their Tuscany villas.

What a wonderful time to leave Europe!

With the governments willful ignorance and mismanagement of the Covid outbreak, and seeing the needless deaths of over 60,000 people and now with the biggest recession in Europe, you'd think we'd have space for a few dinghies of refugees.

What I don’t get and people don’t seem to be taking this in - a recession like this will kill a far higher number than ‘the’ virus ever will in many, many ways and far more deaths in the large cohort below 65 years of age with no underlying conditions.

'Levelling up Britain. World beating. Taking back control. Safe pair of hands. Everything in our power'

Service economies are like dogs in a river treading water...they drown in the end. 😮

But you have Boris Johnson’s toxic white nationalism and that’s what’s really important.

What happens when you think allowing a pandemic to rip through the population will help to save the economy. The Tories are so good with the economy aren't they? Allowing manufacturing to collapse and relying too heavily on the services sector was a great idea.

Don't worry. brexit is coming.

Esto solo acaba de empezar. Las consecuencias de este primer semestre de 2020 durarán décadas

You can thank the vocal minority, quack scientists & moronic politicians for this - their overreaction to a virus that has an over 99% survival rate for which they put the whole country into lockdown

Nearly double of most other EU countries. I wonder why?
