Photos show a surreal scene at the Kentucky Derby during the pandemic, with almost no fans in the stadium and protests demanding justice for Breonna Taylor

"Churchill Downs and all of our team members feel strongly that it is our collective responsibility as citizens of Louisville to do all we responsibly can to protect the health, safety, and security of our community in these challenging times and believe that running the Derby without spectators is the best way to do that," Churchill Downs officials said in a statement. "We deeply regret the disappointment this will bring to our loyal fans.

And some wore face masks customized with the name of their favorite horse. The fan pictured below is wearing a mask emblazoned with the name of the winning horse, Authentic.Wagering on the Kentucky Derby is a sport in itself — but this year, the bets were few and far between.was $79.4 million compared to $165.5 millionThe steep drop was due to the absence of on-track wagering, fewer horses racing because of the pandemic, and a prohibitive favorite, the Derby said.
