On-campus interviews for law students are getting postponed and moving online. Here's the latest on how Columbia, NYU, and 4 other law schools are reworking the high-stakes process.

Law firms, nonprofits, and government agencies typically interview thousands of second-year law students at universities across the US about opportunities for the summer and longer term.

The receptions firms used to host at their offices, calls, and coffees where lawyers and law students used to build informal connections have largely moved to Zoom, and online platforms like InternX and FloRecruit are replacing hotels and classrooms as interview venues.There's a 'fundamental shift' happening at Big Law firms, which are laying off workers even as they're raising pay

"For example, they have the ability to be an extern, to have a client and be able to talk about their experience serving that client," Ricardo said. "I think they'll have a more well-rounded set of experiences and have a better sense of what they want." Though the school has not yet registered employers for the winter interview program, Dorzback anticipates that "the number of firms will remain stable, yet the number of positions they seek to fill may decrease" due to the economic instability caused by the pandemic.

While it's too early to tell how participation might change from past years, Casaleggi said, one upshot of the change has been more opportunities for public-sector and nonprofit employers, whose recruiting cycle typically starts a little later than Big Law firms. The school has gotten a "fantastic response" from participants in its"We're an office that's really big on career satisfaction and finding a good fit," she said.
