The auto industry has long dragged its feet on the matter of electric vehicles, but now there’s a massive shift under way.

Sept. 25, 2020, 9:37 PM UTCCalifornia could join France, Norway and the United Kingdom in banning cars with traditional combustion engines, after Gov. Gavin Newsom'sBut there are plenty of obstacles, including the technical challenges of sourcing raw materials and producing enough batteries and fuel-cells, as well as the need to deliver vehicles consumers will want to buy.

However, there is growing optimism that even without new mandates, sales will surge. At the launch on Wednesday of Volkswagen's ID.4, its first long-range electric car for the U.S., VW Group of America CEO Scott Keogh said he expects U.S. demand will reach “15 to 20 percent” by 2025, and then"spike up from there."

The auto industry has long dragged its feet on the matter of electric vehicles, but now there’s a massive shift under way — and not just from new entrants such as Tesla, Lucid and Rivian. GM CEO Mary Barra said General Motors is on “a path to an all-electric future,” with “20 or more” BEVs planned by 2023. VW, meanwhile, targets 50 by 2025 through its various brands. Even niche players like Rolls-Royce are plugging in.

But “the good news is that things are moving in the right direction,” said Stephanie Brinley, principal auto analyst with IHS Markit.

Are people ready to go electric. I’m not. Maybe a hybrid. Not fully electric. Not enough charging stations. There should always be choice. Tired of the elites pushing us into the direction they want.

Embarrassed to have been born in such a stupid state!

Ban 'sales' not banning gas-powered cars. Report the truth.

How does CA generate it's electricity? If not geo or solar then they're still using fossil fuels or nuclear which means banning gas cars is bunk.

1 problem is this would wipe out car dealers since electric cars are basically maintenance free, dealers can't make enough just selling cars.

Probably step in right direction but as a result of strong lobbyists

How are we going to charge all those electric cars? California can’t even keep the lights on when it gets hot out, and that’s at a time when a lot of business are closed because of the Chinese virus.

Besides the cost of a new electric car, the costs of adding a charging station outside of your homes, and charging time! It’s not instantaneous!

Wait until Bill Gates dims the sun. Gonna be a lot of in shape people in California, running the hamster wheel to charge their cars.

How much do electric cars cost ?

Where will electricity come from?

So stupid

So many fighting for things to remain the same, afraid of progress, wanting to stick with our polluting ways. Climate change and global warming are real things that will severely impact the human race for many decades to come

A state that can't even keep electric on now, wants their vehicles to go all electric. Genius!

No. Not even close. MPG has increased with more 4 bangers and some cars when hybrid motors.

The question should be 'is California ready to go electric'

Where do they plan on getting the electricity from? They don't even have enough to power the state now. Then there is the taxes they will pile on. Massive homelessness do to high rent. Now the threat of powerlessness?

NUCLEAR POWER HERE WE GO!

But now I want an electric car.

Beyond ready in 15 years. Just look at the difference between 1920 and 1935 in automobiles. Invest in battery technology now.

Now the electrical roll outs will expand

The state that doesn't have a properly working electric grid wants all electric cars. Honestly, at this point California is the punchline to damn near anything.

Nothing California does makes sense.

will have to severely lower the costs and not just stick folks with some sort of compact car.

Oh sure .. thdn watch how easily the criminal Deep State would be able to shut drivers down on a whim ..

Fuck the industry can california handle the power draw ... They can't handle the current draw much less millions of electric cars

15 yrs is a blink of an eye and we are nowhere near ready for this. Apartment complexes and homes would need to be retrofitted in some way, increasing the cost. Also who's to say people don't just drive to the next state to buy a gas power vehicle to avoid all this?

No they will never be ready. They will bleed the beast until the drop of fuel is released from the exhaust.

They were ready in the year 1900.

California does not. gavinnewsom wants as many tax dollars as he can get. Raise his wage while fucking everyone else.

lol cali and their elected idiots. So instead of thinking of ways to fix their power grid they are coming up with solutions to tax it more! Lol. Have a budget problem, don't cut spending just tax more. Short on power, use more power! It's their answer! Less means more in CalI

Yes, but can PG&E handle it? No. So for people in the country this won't work.

How are they going to power them Cars when the can not even produce enough Electric to keep the lights on!! with rolling black outs!! LMFAO

Fuck the auto industry. We should be more concerned about the electric generation [utility] industry. No way it can sustain the capacity requirements to accommodate electric cars. The infrastructure is severely lacking.

Yes,since all the automakers have at least one electric model or planning to in the next 5 years

California can't even handle a hot day without blackouts...

Awesome! One day soon it will be common place.

Let's file this under 'never going to happen'

They'll have it for CA the same way they had improved fuel efficiency standards (which CA led the country on). It's too big of a market. Seems like a pretty pointless question to ask because the tech is already there, it just needs refined.

Who cares what an industry is 'Ready' for? In a TRUE CAPITALISM it shouldn't matter because innovation makes the market move! But America ISN'T Capitalism at all, is it?£¶

Does California have the electric infrastructure to Handle everyone having electric cars

No, not even nearly ready, but wanting to and doing are two completely different concepts.

California can't keep the lights on as it is... Millions of people plugging a car in at night...

Does it matter? They have to be ready when it goes into effect. They have time, it’s one state. Besides they have a similar deadline in Paris (2030), France(2040); all manufacturers are working on EVs.

It doesn't have a choice. What's your point?

Yes.

OH NO WHAT WILL PEOPLE DRIVE?

Hmmmm
