“Yes,” says Tanaka Shigeki, Senior General Manager of Takatsu Manufacturing Co., Ltd., which makes robotic machines for Toyota. “I think robots will be able to take on more tasks when they can be given attachments such as eyes.” That day may be here now. Kyoto Robotics is already making “eyes” for robots, while Nabtesco Corporation supplies gears to help robots move smoothly like human beings.

Tanaka Shigeki, Senior General Manager of Takatsu Manufacturing Co., Ltd., which makes robot hemming machines that join the outer and inner metal parts of cars.Takatsu takes its lead from the high production standards of its main customer, Toyota. “We are aiming to make maintenance-free machines that require no regular inspections even when production exceeds 1 million units over five years,” Takatsu CEO Takatsu Shinichi explains.

“I can see robots with brains sharing tasks with humans in the future,” says Habe Atsushi, President of Nabtesco’s Precision Equipment Company, which makes gears for industrial robots.Nabtesco has a 60% share of the global precision reduction gear market for joints of medium- and large-sized industrial robots. Since it started its precision reduction gear business 24 years ago, the company has sold around 10 million units with a current annual output of 800,000 units.

Kyoto Robotics founder and CEO Xu Gang shows how robots using his company’s vision system can see in three dimensions in order to move and sort boxes and other objects.Xu recognizes that robot hands are less dexterous than human hands but have the advantage of never getting tired. “The number of man-hours required is increasing and there are labor shortages,” Xu notes. “It’s a natural progression for human labor to be replaced by robots in the future.
