Brussels was never going to allow Britain’s internal market bill to go uncontested, says Catherine Barnard, professor of EU law at Cambridge University

The bill was always going to cause trouble in Brussels. Specifically, the internal market bill gives ministers powers to breach aspects of the Northern Ireland protocol – part of the withdrawal agreement – on state aid and customs duties, and also the provision in the withdrawal agreement on direct effect .
