How leaders can better track and manage their employees' performance remotely without coming off as micromanagers (by adriangranzella)

Buffer postponed its 2020 performance review schedule due to COVID-19, an approach Murph is in alignment with. He noted that many companies are still trying to hit the metrics they set a quarter ago, as if the world hasn't changed, but that it's important to consider adjusting expectations.

Buffer has similarly adjusted expectations and working norms. "During the initial quarantines and shutdowns, we gave ample permission for work not to be 'normal' and for deadlines to adjust accordingly," Miller said. "We understood and heard how the stress of this situation affected work, life, and families."that it plans to continue through 2020.

"On the other hand, there were always team members who were more proactive and would ask for my time," she said. "Without being intentional about scheduling, these folks can get a disproportionately high amount of time compared to others who are not speaking up." Ruiz also suggested having these conversations over video chat. "I cannot overstate the value or importance of video calls for maintaining engagement, accountability, and clear communication," she said. "There is so much that can be misunderstood or assumed without clarity."

"In a remote environment, teammates might feel hesitant to ask questions or 'bother' someone, so by tasking other teammates as a buddy or mentor, it gives permission for any and all questions," Miller said.
