OxyContin maker Purdue Pharma agrees to plead guilty to federal criminal charges and pay more than $8 billion for its role in the US opioid crisis

The money will go to opioid treatment and abatement programs. The privately held company has agreed to pay a $3.5 billion fine as well as forfeit an additional $2 billion in past profits, in addition to the $2.8 billion it agreed to pay in civil liability. The company will be dissolved as part of the criminal charges, and its assets will be used to create a new government-controlled company.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, 450,000 people died in the United States in the 10 years starting in 1999 from overdoses involving any opioid, including prescription and illicit opioids. And about a third of those deaths in 2018 involved prescription opioids.

Best song I heard in a while ☺️☺️

THERE SHOULD BE MURDER CHARGES

And liberals want more government 😂😂 I’ll never take advice from people who are so willing to give up their lives to others

Great news,if this doesnt involve immunity from punishment. Purdue committed a crime against humanity, pushing a generation into a canyon and inciting other Cos. to do this surreptitiously.

Omg this is huge !!!

... and will the crime family that runs Purdue Pharma be required to disgorge themselves of all dividends, profits, commissions, etc. that they received primarily from the sale of OxyContin ... otherwise, this is meaningless except to get OxyContin off of the streets

!

Someone needs to be watching when those billions are paid and whose account they are put into.

Some good news.

And conveniently, like in 2007, none of them will go to jail.

Knowingly Destroyed so many lives. The real el chapo White collar crime

Can the media please report the truth on this. Under the agreement Purdue is never anticipated to pay $8 billion anything. They cap out at about $2 billion, cash and in-kind, and the rest is waived. The family extracted $10 billion for $225 million, or as Trump said 'peanuts'.

Sen. MoscowMarsha Blackburn has deep ties to Big Pharma & won't release her taxes. What is she hiding?

How about $8 billion plus the still beating hearts of the evil Sackler family on a spike. That would be a much fairer settlement.

I like the dollar figure but I feel like there are probably a few people involved in this that should be sacrificed for public execution.

Good

JAIL......SHUT...DOWN.......

FUCK

8 billion is not enough

Thats like the $750 Trump paid in income taxez... A flick off the wrist.. Blasphemy!

Blame culture at it's best! Blame everyone else but lack of awareness in instances of who should not be using, or when to wean due to down regulated mu-opioid receptors. Now ppl who used with no issue have to suffer. I hate America. I hate how people blame.

Where does the $8bn go?

Maybe someone at Purdue pharma should be going to jail.

Good.

They made way more than 8 billion and they killed hundreds of thousands of people. Lots of Doctors were involved in this as well, it wasn't just the top guys in the company, doctors all over the world helped push this company.

Its still nowhere near enough.

Who's going to jail? No one.....

Who are they going to pay .. surnames?

People died. People are still dying. People need to go to jail.

Oxy killed my best friend in 2015 - who are they paying 8 billion to, the government? Sure isn’t the families of the dead.

Trump Will Wins 2020 Amen

We don’t believe you anymore!

Oh you caught a dirty drug dealer now you need to find a scapegoat to put out for the year or two under home arrest, america is so corrupt!

Help Nigerians EndBadGoveranceInNigeria

And how much have they profited off this drug? I’m guessing $8B is well worth the cost. This number needs to hurt. Badly.

A good start.

Yes they should be held accountable and pay up. Parents need to look in the mirror and realize they need to keep it locked up or hidden or something so their kids don’t get into it. My mom was prescribed it she doesn’t even like taking it but she keeps getting prescribed

This is Nigeria that you can't report ...I'm ashamed of u cnn

Not a good week to be named Purdue

THEY NEED TO GO TO PRISON!!!SO SO SO SO SO SICK OF SEEING THESE CORPORATE CRIMINALS BUY THEIR WAY OUT OF PRISON!! THIS IS BULLSHIT!

Yes, money countless deaths! Mmmmerica!!

There’s blood on ur hands MFs

Did anyone get put behind bars? No.

Good

$8billion is barely a drop in the bucket towards fixing the situation.

DO they have $8 billion? Didn't they transfer all the company assets to Purdue family members and other stockholders and declare bankruptcy

And in the meantime, my son is in rehab for the 5th time, and facing felony possession charges. What started it? OxyContin, which he stole from my medicine cabinet. The doctors were giving it out like candy.

Here’s 8 billion to get people hooked on Suboxone. SMH. Half that should go to Appalachian families.

😮

Unquestionably financially worth it for them. Awful
