New federal support for Canada's pandemic-battered airline industry will be contingent on carriers providing refunds to passengers whose flights were cancelled, the government announced on Sunday.

Transport Minister Marc Garneau laid out the requirement as he announced that Ottawa is ready to respond to the sector's desperate pleas for federal assistance by launching talks later this week.

Many Canadians have since expressed anger over not getting their money back. The Canadian Transportation Agency received 8,000 complaints between mid-March and the end of August, most of which are believed to be related to refunds. Yet Garneau also made clear what the government would be demanding from airlines, starting with refunds of what is believed to be millions of dollars in pre-paid flight tickets and a curb on cancelled routes.

The tough words around refunds were cautiously welcomed Sunday as a good first step by Canadian Automobile Association vice-president Ian Jack, whose organization is one of the largest retailers of vacations and leisure travel in Canada.

It should.

The pandemic has been showing us the bad players in our government and economy, look to the states at their unemployment and covid cases, the gov there gave them as little as they could while trillions went out the back door, glad we didnt do that here like in 2008

Good to hear a customer focused grant.

Support will come in “hours maybe days”

Hopefully refunds go back 20 years when AirCanada was fleecing me 850 one way from Van to Rupert and Selling Van to Heathrow return for 250 . Screw the airlines

This is 8 months too late. The airline industry has already screwed thousands of Canadians

Their should be talking. People paid for a flight and if the airlines can’t perform give the people their money back. No discussion necessary.

Federal government should give 0.5 percent loan, but the collateral is airplanes, and the loan is paid back on a lease back agreement. That way we have an asset if they go bankrupt

NO! Yes to refunding customers, but NO to ANY Federal Support!!! These greedy bastards are no different from any other business that's been forced to shut down. NO! NO! NO!!!

Well if we hadn’t shut down the economy for a virus that has something like a 98% survival rate (according to the WHO), maybe we wouldn’t need to be talking about saving the airlines 🤷‍♀️

My flight was insured! Get on the insurance companies also and get my money back. 😎🖕🖕

This is such a Trudeau move. Get airlines to refund their customers money, so that Trudeau can then take that money and give it to the airlines. 🤡🇨🇦

Pretty sure that WestJet already figured this out.

Yes they should not be given support when they still have our money!

No more bailouts for airlines, let's use our money for progress. Come on people, why pay huge amounts to chug fuel and take a day to get coast to coast. Do it low impact at lower cost and do it faster. Bullet trains. elonmusk JustinTrudeau erinotoole theJagmeetSingh 🖖👍

Should be contingent on hiring people back and not cutting more jobs. The rich corporations take money for help, then lay off workers, and still pay out bonuses to executives.

Remember the time PattyHajdu didn't wear a mask at the airport?

AviancaNAM please be aware this airline force people to get Boucher and they are refusing to provide cash back to passengers. If you look at their Facebook page you can see the amount of people complaining about not getting money back.

If Air Canada can afford to obtain Air Transat then why do they need support from taxpayers money?

The airlines refund customers and then get free tax payer money?

Air Canada needs to offer cash refunds before getting any federal support. Air Canada had enough assets to purchase Transat.

I thought WestJet already announced a refund program that started Nov 1st?

Finally

Give federal support for more rail and let this industry die the way the free market intended

Perhaps you should invest in rail again across this great. Action. We can socially distance and still get to see this great country rather than being shoved into big infested incubator so we can get the call a week later from contact tracing
