Maybe it’s no surprise that this aggressively gorgeous environment and idyllic culture attracts a crop of overachievers like Jen Rupert and other fiercely talented women and that may be the secret to what makes Aspen’s number one employer, the Aspen Skiing Company so stunningly unique.

Extreme overachieving is apparently the norm for those who work for the Aspen Skiing Company, a still family-owned, private ski business that has four mountains in its portfolio: Buttermilk, Snowmass, Aspen Highlands and Aspen Mountain. The company prides itself on supporting its employees to become deeply embedded in the community.

“If the community fails, we fail. If we succeed, the community succeeds. We as a company are truly always taking the long view because we are of this community,” said Rana Dershowitz, chief operating officer of the mountain division and chief legal officer for the Aspen Skiing Company. But it’s in that balance of working hard and being part of it all that sustains its employees and is the essence of the company.

“As a company we are having strong conversations about gender diversity and how women can run operations and bring a different perspective to the business side of those operations,” Ertl said. Trying to get women to be rethinking and re-imagining what those jobs are and thinking about themselves in different ways is critical.”But right now, what’s top of mind is COVID-19 and how to safely open and stay open for the coming 2021 season which begins on Thanksgiving Day.
