There is a growing interest in Nigeria as a manufacturing hub for phone manufacturers, stakeholders in the industry confirmed to The PUNCH.

It was gathered that government policies, especially the Nigerian National Broadband Plan 2020 – 2025, are encouraging them to make new investment decisions on Nigeria.Encouraging assembly of telecommunication/ICT end user equipment and devices locally was identified as one of the priority targets to be achieved in the Broadband Plan.

The government plan was put to together by a team of stakeholders led by the Chief Executive Officer, MainOne, Funke Opeke. “There are already people who are interested in doing locally manufacture of smartphones, about four or five of them. The incentives planned for manufactures of locally made smartphones are still in place. We are meeting with various arms of government that encourages investment like the NIPC and the Ministry of Trade, Investment and Industry,” he said.

He noted that manufacturing of hardware digital devices was not an easy task as it required a lot of support from the government. Many foreign phone manufacturers had promised in the past to establish factories in Nigeria but had dumped the idea, citing entry barriers into the market as the challenge.
